Let Us Hear and See…

Is it enough to attend church, listen to a sermon and know that Jesus Christ is our Father? What does that do for us, our family, our community and our world? What happens when we listen for and to Jesus Christ? The first thing is – does Jesus Christ speak to anyone? What happens when we see Light of Jesus Christ? Where does the Light originate?

When Jesus met Simon called Peter and Andrew they were fishermen and, seemingly, knew nothing about this Jesus Christ fella who walks up and says “follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” 

This raises, at least, two questions – what compelled Jesus to call Simon, Peter and what in the hearts of these men made them stop their task, quit their job and follow Jesus?

Peter, his identity in Christ, would be used to teach us some of the true wonders of God, God’s love for us and the power God commands. Peter also teaches us about our true identity in Christ. Peter teaches us what that means and at one point teaches us a painful lesson of accepting our identity in Christ.

It has been said that we only learn through pain. Well, those lessons usually stand out, but pain does not have to be the only path to wisdom.

One of the great lessons Jesus teaches us lives in the story of Him walking on the water and almost being joined by Peter.

Matthew  4 NKJV

24 But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
25 Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.
26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.
27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”
28 And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”
29 So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.
30 But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
33 Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.”

Does the enemy begin saying to Simon (not Peter) ‘what makes you think you can walk on water, you can’t do that?’ or Does Peter take his eyes of Jesus just long enough to lose all sight of Jesus causing Peter to lose his identity in Christ as Peter?

“Who do you say I am?”
