Trusting A Power Greater Than Ourselves

All sinners have the same problem and this problem is now encouraged to the point of having a decade – a full ten years – all of it’s own. It is called the decade of the selfie. Humans so obsessed with themselves they couldn’t stop taking photos of how beautiful, unique and superior they are to everything and everyone around them. What good is a graven image of ones self if they couldn’t share with as many people as possible? Well, social media will do the trick and help push this idea, literally over a cliffs edge. You know, for the “perfectly unique” image of how awesome a person has become, how great their life is in their own eyes. A convincing lie to tell themselves and make a sad attempt at convincing the world.

This is how sinners move away from God, place a big, thick veil between themselves and the love of God. Some do awaken, come to their senses and realize what has happened, unfortunately, far too many never awaken and are lost forever. These unfortunate souls never have the experience of mercy, grace and a relationship with Jesus Christ. No, as years go by the veil thickens, the misery grows and the heart hardens. They keep their back turned away from forgiveness.

While I was “out there” building a version of the veil, in a drunken stupor, all the same traits were prevalent that are described above. The only difference is society views drunkenness less acceptable than a selfie, all the while the same thing occurred to both the drunk and self-centered, self-serving and selfish person described above. No, we are quiet similar in who we became. This is the reason the 12 Steps apply to everyone. They are Biblical in nature, the Steps are not concerned with what you did, only that you tear the veil and get closer to Jesus Christ – the way, the truth and the life. It doesn’t matter how a person comes to this realization as long as they come to this realization.

For a number of years the paragraphs below were a guiding light to help illuminate the path towards the grace of God. These words, along with a few other paragraphs, were read on a daily basis. These words opened the eyes of someone yesterday. Please pray for Kenneth and pray that the Holy Spirit fills his heart and continues to bring him back from the edge.

RARELY HAVE we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path. Those who do not recover are people who cannot or will not completely give themselves to this simple program, usually men and women who are constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves. There are such unfortunates. They are not at fault; they seem to have been born that way. They are naturally incapable of grasping and developing a manner of living which demands rigorous honesty. Their chances are less than average. There are those, too, who suffer from grave emotional and mental disorders, but many of them do recover if they have the capacity to be honest.

Our stories disclose in a general way what we used to be like, what happened, and what we are like now. If you have decided that you want what we have and are willing to go to any length to get it – then you are ready to take certain steps.

At some of these we balked. We thought that we could find an easier, softer way. But we could not. With all earnestness at our command, we beg of you to be fearless and thorough from the very start.
