House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) says she currently has no plans to bring Democrats’ bill to add four new members to the Supreme Court (“court packing”), but that might change if Pres. Joe Biden’s commission to study the move determines it’s necessary.

At her weekly press conference, a reporter asked, point-blank, if she supports and would commit to bringing the bill to the House floor for a vote:

“Do you support Jerry Nadler’s bill to expand the Supreme Court by four seats and would you commit to bringing that bill to the floor?”

“No,” was Pelosi’s one-word answer, adding that she does support President Joe Biden’s creation of a commission to study the prospect of court-packing and that she thinks the House has more pressing work to do:

“I support the president’s commission to study such a proposal, but frankly, I’m not, right now, we’re back. Our members, our committees are working, are putting together an infrastructure bill and the rest.”

Pelosi added that the nation’s size, growth and economic challenges might well “necessitate” packing the Supreme Court, but “I have no plans to bring it to the floor” at this time:

“I don’t know that that’s a good idea or a bad idea. I think it’s an idea that should be considered and I think the president is taking the right approach to have a commission to study such a thing. It’s a big step.

“It’s not out of the question. It has been done before, in the history of our country, a long time ago.
