Honoring Our Father…

Honoring Our Father…

Most of us refer to our dad as “father”. The past several weeks there has been a concerted effort to make a change, even so far as stopping, mid sentence to make the correction.  Our Father is our Father and our dad is the head of household. This may not be how everyone sees these titles, but it is how we can make a clear distinction between whom we are referencing.

There are a number of references throughout the Bible calling for children to honor their parents, father and mother. Why is this so important?

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”
And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord. ~Ephesians 6:1-4 NKJB

Paul seems to tie the small “f” father to the capitalized “F” Father God so that we will have a better understanding of the reasoning behind some the discipline we should encounter as children, even adult children. Our Father and our father both love us first and want us to succeed. In return we should honor Our Father and love all of His children as He loves us. If we don’t honor our father and mother the other people in our lives don’t really stand much of a chance of receiving any love from us. We will only be takers and rarely givers. Our understanding of respect, charity, forgiveness, honor and humility will be stunted.

The generosity of Our Father is only matched by His willingness to forgive us. It is only thru His strength that we forgive when everything of our flesh tells us the opposite. For this reason, we have an earthly father to train us in the ways of the Lord.

Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ; not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men, knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free. ~Ephisans 6:5-8 NKJB

Either the Gospel is divine inspiration, the Word of God teaching us how to live and how to be a reflection of Him, or it’s nothing more than a historical account of events.
