What Do You Want Me To Do?

What Do You Want Me To Do?

After getting sober and cleaning up the mess created after 25+ years of drinking and drugging, it became clear that reading and history were of great interest. This new found love opened the door to a wide variety of different opportunities.

While studying the history of AA, and what the first members were doing prior to the publication of the book Alcoholics Anonymous, what became clear was something that had been learned in the meeting rooms. A true alcoholic – a sinner – is willing to do anything to make it stop. Using the word “anything” can open up a can-of-worms. In this case we are referencing things that are wholesome, Biblical and God centered, otherwise nothing would change.

Rarely does a person question what their sponsor tells them to do. Like, go to meetings, shut up and listen and pray, read, pray some more, read, then pray even more – above all, don’t drink (sin). If a person thinks about drinking (sinning) call their sponsor and discuss what is happening in the mind – what is the enemy saying, what seeds are being planted?

We see this very clearly with Saul. Saul is a murderer, a kidnapper and an agent of the enemy. Saul has the authority, the knowledge and the willingness to commit heinous crimes against Gods people.

Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. ~Acts 9:1-2 NKJV

Saul is ready for another venture into the depths of darkness against the Believers of Christ. But something happens on the way to the killing fields. Jesus Christ intervenes and changes Saul’s heart, changes his mind and changes his IDENTITY to a new creature in Christ. Saul is born again in the Spirit and is transformed into Paul. Saul’s response is very simple.

As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?”
And he said, “Who are You, Lord?”
Then the Lord said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.”
So he, trembling and astonished, said, “Lord, what do You want me to do?”
Then the Lord said to him, “Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” ~Acts 9:3-6 NKJV

Paul doesn’t even question what is happening as the Lord had already told Saul / Paul it will do you no good to fight back as you are now mine. Not only did Paul not fight back Paul simply ask – “Lord, what do You want me to do?” Or said another way – God, what is your will for me in this day? Jesus Christ answered Paul, told Paul exactly what to do and then the really important part happened – Paul, without hesitation, did precisely what the Lord had ask of him.

Either the Gospel is divine inspiration, the Word of God teaching us how to live and how to be a reflection of Him, or it’s nothing more than a historical account of events.
