China’s foreign ministry has accused President Trump of “repulsive” attempts to “blackmail” the World Health Organization for its refusal to bow to the wishes of its largest contributor.

The remarks Tuesday from ministry spokesman Geng Shuang flip on their head U.S. criticisms of the U.N. agency, which Trump has accused of deferring to China’s wishes as it responds to the coronavirus pandemic that originated in that country late last year.

They come as new polling shows a rise in negative opinions among Americans towards both the Chinese government and the WHO.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has enthusiastically praised the Chinese state (which has in turn praised the WHO and Tedros) for its handling of the crisis, despite widespread accusations that its attempts to cover up the outbreak and initial slow response facilitated the spread from the epicenter of Wuhan, and then beyond China’s borders.

WHO also stands accused of being too slow in declaring a global health emergency – a step opposed by Beijing – and of not challenging China’s assertions in the first half of January that there was no evidence of person-to-person transmission of the virus.

After Trump last week announced a halt to WHO funding pending a review of its handling of the pandemic, other governments sprang to its defense, among them the 134-country “G77 plus China” bloc.

Geng’s salvo came in response to a press briefing question about the G77 plus China’s statement of support for the WHO in the face to Trump’s funding suspension.

“The U.S. believes that WHO should do its bidding because it is the largest contributor,” he said. “This is typical hegemonic mentality. When WHO insisted on objectivity and impartiality and refused to cater, the U.S. threatened it by cutting funding. This is classic blackmailing.”
