Death in the Flesh

Death in the Flesh

When I was out running around drinking, drugging and doing all the other things associated with such debauchery, it was easy to get caught up in the good times and believe everyone around was a friend and we loved one another and looked out for one another. Well, turns out, nothing could have been further from the truth. It was all nothing more than idle nonsense. Since coming home to Jesus Christ there are, literally, four people that remain in my life that actually care about me and my wife. Before there were dozens of people I considered friends. All gone.

When I made the decision to turn my life over to a “higher power” (Jesus Christ) everything changed. Running to-and-fro was no longer an option, nor did I want it to be. Chasing women was no longer an option, nor did I want it to be. The day it became apparent that I could not hold my genitalia in one hand and God in the other was the day that I understood the impact of the carnal mind and heart. That day, unlike the day I got sober, changed my life forever. It was probably a year after I had gotten sober that I finally realized what was happening and that I was actually closer to turning my back on Jesus Christ, again, than I had ever thought possible. Jesus, once again, pulled me from the wreckage, cleared my mind and softened my heart. We when give our lives to Christ, He doesn’t want some of who and what we are, He wants it all.

1 Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin,
2 that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.
3 For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.
4 In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you.
5 They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
6 For this reason the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
