Pop Culture / Celebrity Worship

Andy Warhol has been attributed to the saying – “In the future everybody will be world famous for fifteen minutes.” We see this playing out in today’s society with more TV programming than ever before. There are TV programs coming online everyday featuring people no one had ever heard of before that are suddenly everywhere you turn. The “selfie generation” where all these people worship themselves. The masses have been programmed to believe the lives of the people on TV and online are somehow important to their own.

If we look at what is happening with “sport celebrity worship” it is even worse. TV tells the people this person or that person represent them or somehow should influence their lives and should especially influence the lives of our children. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth.

We see in Luke 4 (NKJV) the warning, and more importantly the appropriate response when Jesus is being tempted by the devil. If our society continues down the path of celebrity and sports worship, there will continue to be massive problems in our society. Only One should be known, only One has authority of influence over our lives.

5 Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
6 And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.
7 Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”
8 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
