Remember the prisoners as if chained with them

Remember the prisoners as if chained with them

If you’ve ever been to jail then you know it is not designed for humans. The images we see in movies and on television attempting to give a glimpse of what a prison cell may have been like when Paul, John or Joseph were captured may or may not be accurate. However, it is most certainly not any place for humans to spend time. The modern jails, I would imagine, are probably closer to a country club setting than what the disciples dealt with.

Part of my past involved spending time behind bars. There are no words to describe the humiliation and loneliness that accompany being in a place like that. I can’t really imagine what any of the disciples experience would have been like, but I can speak to my own. Having someone “chained with them” on the outside brings a sense of calm that can only be explained as Our Father providing us rest. It is the same with prayer. We are not allowed to know how it works, we just know that it does.It is because of Our Father these things happen. It is because He loves us in the ways in which He does that the “one body” is what we experience when enslaved or when others are enslaved. The enslavement does not have to be physical it could just as easily be the enemy whispering lies in our ear and disrupting our rest with Our Father.

1 Let brotherly love continue.
2 Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels
3 Remember the prisoners as if chained with them—those who are mistreated—since you yourselves are in the body also.
4 Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.
5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
6 So we may boldly say:

“The Lord is my helper;
I will not fear.
What can man do to me?”
