Designed To Worship

Designed To Worship by Randolph Jason Gospel News Network

I recently learned that we, the human race, are actually built, designed, born with a built-in desire to worship. We can pick whatever we would like to worship and place it in the “worship basket” that is an inherent part of our being. What we can not do is say we will not worship. Too late we already do it.

Where does this “worship basket” live? Is it some part of our heart, our brain or where can I find it?

What about our “mind”, is it part of our being or our soul? Speaking of of our soul, where is it located? These are parts of our “body” that can not be located with an X-ray, ultrasound or MRI. No, one can look, search, poke, prod or do whatever you wish but it will not “find” a mind, a soul or a worship basket within the human body…but they do exist.

Don’t believe me? Think about your life, where you are right now. What’s the single most important “thing” to you? Can you live without it? Does it “tell you what to do” or “when to do or how to do”? Is it a family member, a sports team or some inanimate object? As a recovered alcoholic I fully understand this whole concept. During the final days of “drinking with purpose”, the clock would strike 3pm and my mind would immediately race to the bar and sit for exactly 2 hours and 15 minutes until my body arrived. This was the “end times” for the demon that lived within and devoured my life.  I went through the 12 steps of AA and cleaned up my “soul”. Emptied the worship “basket” of the debris that I had filled it with and began filling the now empty basket with Jesus, the Holy Spirit and God. It would take 16 years to finally understand what happened, what was happening and who should be in charge of my life. Funny thing, it’s not me that should be in charge, but rather a beautiful, living God that knows everything about me and likes me anyway.

You see, sometimes we just need to get out of our own way to allow the Truth to seep in and unravel our life. For me, and I believe a great many other people, this begins with worship. We must hand over the reigns to a Power that knows and understands so much more than we could possibly even begin to know or understand. We simply need to fill the “worship basket” with the “fuel our spirits were designed to burn.”

C.S. Lewis in “Mere Christianity”
“God made us: invented us as a man invents an engine. A car is made to run on petrol, and it would not run properly on anything else. Now God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other. That is why it is just no good asking God to make us happy in our own way without bothering about religion. God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there.”
