He Restrained Them Not…

As with Samuel, when the Lord speaks, we should respond. When we are awakened in sleep, we may want to ask the Lord to speak to us that we may know His word, we may know His guidance for our life.

When we listen, God speaks. When we obey, God acts. If someone believes that God is done speaking the question remains…how could that person believe in Christ, follow Christ or claim thereof they are a Christian? God has been very busy speaking to us, but far too many have been far too busy with other aspects of their life to hear His word, to seek His word or to listen for His word. Too many football games, reality TV shows or trips to the gym or to the office.

And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth. And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle. ~ 1 Samuel 3:10-11 KJB

Samuel is young boy, living his dad Eli’s house, where Eli has allowed some of his sons to turn their back to the Lord and live in sin. Eli’s house has become filled with the inequity of his sons transgressions. The Lord, our God, has taken none to kindly to these actions by the sons and towards Eli for allowing it to happen. This is the same as in our homes today. When the parents allow their children to run amuck there is a cost. The pain and suffering is for the entire home not just the person or persons committing the sin(s).

For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever. ~ 1 Samuel 3:13-14 KJB

This is exactly how it has worked in the past, in the present and will continue to be the same in the future. We must act to save our home, to keep our house in order for the Lord to bless our house and to keep His children near to His throne. Sometimes painful decisions are born from the actions of others that live in our home. Sometimes these decisions cause us a great deal of pain and suffering, until we realize the love of God is directing our decision making. In all we do, let us glorify the Lord. How can that be if our home is filled with transgressions, sin and inequities? Impossible.

Either the Scripture is the divine Word of God teaching us how to live and how to be a reflection of God, or it’s nothing more than a historical account of events.
