A transgender woman made history Sunday after being crowned the winner of the Miss Nevada USA beauty pageant.

Kataluna Enriquez, 27, is the first transgender contestant to receive the honor. Enriquez will advance to compete for the Miss USA title in November.

“Huge thank you to everyone who supported me from day one. My community, you are always in my heart. My win is our win. We just made history. Happy pride,” Enriquez wrote Monday on Instagram.

Enriquez competed with 21 others in the competition, which took place at the South Point Hotel Casino & Spa in Las Vegas, according to the pageant’s website.

While a working model, Enriquez began competing in transgender pageants in 2016 and shifted to compete in cisgender pageants in 2020.

“I wanted to share my story and present that I was more than just a body,” she said. “With pageantry, people think it is only about beauty. But it’s how you present yourself, what you advocate for, what you’ve done, and the goals you have.”

Miss Nevada USA congratulated Enriquez on her victory in an Instagram post on Monday.

“Congratulations to our new Miss Nevada USA @mskataluna 👑 History made!” the organization wrote.
