Did Woman Sin? Genesis 3

Did Woman Sin? Genesis 3

Sin is the instantaneous moment when we separate from God. That’s the sin. All the other “stuff” is our failed attempt to hide our shame and guilt.

Most, if not all, are familiar with Woman (Eve) being tempted by the serpent (snake) in the Garden of Eden.

Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. ~ Genesis 3:1-3 KJB

Separation

Serpent chooses the woman to manipulate into doing something the Lord, our God, has specifically said not to do. Much like the Commandments we call the Ten Commandments or the Greatest Commandment put forth by Jesus Christ. A lot of us fail this every single day. Does that mean the Lord separates from us…or in our shame do we separate from God?

God made us to be with Him, for Him and to Praise Him. God created us. We are part of God and God is part of us. What would make the Creator destroy His Creation just after creating it? Because a “brush stroke” went a stray or the clay didn’t “bend” just right? If that’s the case a lot of us, maybe all of us, are in a lot of trouble.

The serpent continues his manipulative game with her…

And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. ~ Genesis 3:4-6 KJB

What Does God Say?

She looks at the fruit knowing it will make her to see things differently. What happens when we see things differently but not in the way they appear? It happens when we begin doing things without seeking God’s will – FIRST. A lot of people know when they are about to step into a situation that’s wrong. We get “a feeling” a “thought” or our skin crawls but we ignore it. Then disaster strikes what woman discovered is the same thing we experience everyday of our lives – guilt and shame.

And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. ~ Genesis 3:7-10 KJB

We all experience guilt and shame and when it happens there is an overwhelming desire to hide. However, God wrote the Book and not only knows what happened, He knows we will try to hide our shame from Him. It doesn’t work, it never has nor will it ever work.

Love and Forgiveness

The question is…Does God call woman’s action “sin”? Where is that word used in verses 1-10? We all accept it as the original sin. Is the sin wrapped up in the fact that Adam and woman both turned from God and tried to hide from His presence? Is that not what we do?

God forgives because He loves us. Love is the cornerstone of forgiveness and connectedness with God. God knows our flaws, our mistakes and that we are going to continue falling down. His loving arms are waiting to suit us up in His Power, Strength and Might. What is stopping us from receiving it, accepting it and walking with God everyday?

And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat. ~ Genesis 3:11-13 KJB

Did Jesus Christ condemn the woman at the well (John 4) or did He, like our Father, God, invite the woman into a relationship with Himself after she had lived the life she had been living? Did Jesus Christ ever say the woman at the well had committed a sin? Did Jesus condemn her or forgive her?
