If you care about someone you suspect of having a substance-use disorder, it can be tempting to approach them with emotional pleas about why they should seek treatment, but unfortunately, doing so can often have the unintended consequence of focusing their sobriety on making other people happy rather than their own health and happiness. In today’s video, I discuss how my wife approached me regarding my own substance-use problems, and why setting boundaries is a better approach than making emotional pleas for someone to quit drinking or using.
