Walking the Talk…

Walking the Talk…

This phrase, “walking the talk” has been around a long time. Most, if not all of us, have heard it our entire lives. Never having understood who said it or where it came from was never a concern. It seems this is a Biblical saying from 1 John 2

Once a person claims to be follower of Jesus Christ, uses the language and attempts to speak as if he is a follower that person should live by those words.

Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. I John 2:3-6 NKJV

That may not be the origin of the saying, but it should be.

Our Pastor a couple of weeks ago said that he is “always our Pastor”. Explaining what he meant in this manner. Paraphrasing… “You may see me outside my role wearing a t-shirt and bluejeans, however, what you want see is Bud Light on the t-shirt.”

When we wear a sports jersey of our favorite team, or individual team member, is that idolatry? What about when we are wearing a t-shirt of our favorite band, alcoholic beverage or a baseball cap with a logo on it? Would these simple acts not be a form of idolatry; as we display to the world a particular message? It would certainly make it a challenge to spread the gospel wearing a t-shirt from a Marilyn Manson concert. Not saying it couldn’t happen or that it shouldn’t happen, just pointing out that what we say to the world is, more often than not, nonverbal. We speak loudest, and most often, through our body language, how kept we are and other forms of language that don’t include our tongue or lips. Walking the talk is how the Gospel is spread, a living, breathing copy of the Holy Bible, a living, breathing reflection of the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Either the Gospel is divine inspiration, the Word of God teaching us how to live and how to be a reflection of Him, or it’s nothing more than a historical account of events.
